By using a 10MegW resistor, with a noise of 400nV/rtHz, for transimpedance gain and then attenuating the signal by 10 results in an equivalent gain of 1MegW with only 40nV/rtHz of noise. This is less than 1/3 the noise of a single stage TIA with a 1MegW resistor.
